East Malaysia, Sarawak & its National Parks
Sarawak is popularly known as the land of White Rajahs (the land, which originally belonged to Brunei Sultan, was given as gift to a Caucasian for assisting in a war) and is the largest state of Malaysia. Those who are keen in nature and adventure will find it worthwhile to visit its parks. Do know that the weather is humid though.
The Baku National Park, builts in 1957, is one of the oldest nature parks of Sarawak. It is also one of the smallest park and is located at the mouth of the Bako and Kuching Rivers. It is known for its rainforests, waterfalls, jungles, exotic plants, trees and different kinds of animals and birds. The park also has jungle and walking trails where one can go for a leisure walk.
The Niah National Park is located in Miri. The park is is filled with numerous and fantastic limestone caves surrounded by lush green tropical forests, which are filled with various species of plants, animals and birds. The Niah Great Caves are where human remains from the early Stone Age period was found.
The Gunung Mulu National Park, the largest in Sarawak, is one of the more famous national parks in Malaysia. It has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The park is surrounded by threemountains, Gunung Mulu, Gunung Api and Gunung Benarat. Its most popular attraction is the Sarawak Chamber, the world's largest natural enclosure (cave), which is 2300 feet long and 1300 feet wide. Another popular attraction of the park is the Pinnacles (similar to the ones near Perth).
